Christmas or Xmas calling in USA? | By festiveindia4ever.blogspot.com :
Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be God's Son. The word 'Christmas' stems from Christ's (or Jesus') Mass... As a result, we have the name Christ-Mass, which has been reduced to Christmas. People all around the world, whether Christians or not, today celebrate Christmas.
Christmas is also known as Xmas in several parts of the world. Some people believe that calling Christmas 'Xmas' is incorrect since it removes the 'Christ' (Jesus) from the celebration. (Christmas is derived from Christ-Mass, the Church ceremony commemorating Jesus' birth.)
But that's not the case! The Greek letter chi / X (pronounced 'kye' - it rhymes with 'eye') is the initial letter of the Greek word for Christ, Christos, and looks like an X in the Greek language and alphabet.
The initial two letters of Christos in the Greek alphabet, 'chi' and 'rho,' were utilised to construct a monogram (symbol) to signify Jesus' name. This appears to be an X with a little p on top:
Christians occasionally utilise the emblem of a fish (you might see a fish sticker on a car or someone wearing a little fish badge). This derives from the time when the first Christians had to assemble in secret to avoid being killed by the Romans (before Emperor Constantine became a Christian). People began to adopt the sign "Fishers of Men" when Jesus claimed he intended to make his followers "Fishers of Men."
When two Christians met, one drew half of a basic fish shape (typically with their foot in the dust on the ground), while the other drew the other half. 'Ikthus' or 'Ichthys' is the Greek word for fish. The term is made up of five Greek letters. It can also be used to form the Christian belief statement 'Ie-sous Christos Theou Huios So-te-r,' which means "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour" in English. X, or Christos, is the second of these five letters!
As a result, Xmas can also refer to Christmas; however, it should be pronounced 'Christmas' rather than 'ex-mas'!
